It's easy enough to tell you about the benefits of using Sun technology and try and entice you with all the great features. But how do you go about actually getting hold of and playing with this stuff?
Fear not, because help is at hand. Over the next few months, we'll be running a series of technical demo sessions with Sun engineers. This will provide you with the opportunity to see Sun technology in action and ask any questions you may have.
All videos and posters are licenced under a Creative Commons Attribution-No Derivative license.
There are no more demos planned for this semester. Thanks to those who attended the ones held so far. Keep an eye out for announcements of further Sun events next academic year.
This will focus on current technology trends and how these relate back to material covered within an academic setting. This will be of special interest to those expecting to graduate this year, as it will cover the skills required to find a fulfilling job at the end of your education.
This demo will introduce the audience to OpenJDK and the IcedTea project, demonstrating the benefits of Sun's recent move to the GPL as the license for their JDK.
This demo will demonstrate the use of the new Sun SPOT technology. These are small sensor devices with wireless technology that run a Java VM written in Java called Squawk.
This demo will demonstrate the process of virtualisation using Xvm (think Xen) technology.
Our first demonstration was a general introduction to the OpenSolaris operating system and its innovative features, specifically the ZFS filesystem (which was spoken about at length and demoed by Jarod Nash), script-based system and process monitoring with DTrace and virtualised operating systems using Zones. Copies of Developer Preview 2 and OpenSolaris starter kits were available for you to take home; these include several 'live' CD options so you can try OpenSolaris without committing it to your hard disc.
Each movie is provided as a Theora video stream together with a Vorbis audio stream using the Ogg container format. Three versions are provided, suitable for different downloading capabilities: full size (704x576), half size (352x288) and quarter size (176x144). The audio stream is also provided as a separate download using Speex, which may be preferable if you are not bothered about seeing the visual content. Further details of these formats are available on the Xiph website. A DVD copy is available on request.
